I recently had the pleasure of diving into The New Southern Cookbook by Pam and Brittany Wattenbarger and let me tell you, it’s a true gem for any southern cuisine lover. As a Southerner myself, I have a special place in my heart for the comfort food of my childhood and this cookbook delivers just that.
I really appreciated the guide to preparing your kitchen and pantry with the staple ingredients and equipment you’ll need for authentic southern cooking.
The recipes are a perfect blend of classic family recipes and updated, healthier versions of southern staples. I was excited to see some of my personal favorites such as fried chicken and buttermilk pie, as well as new dishes that I couldn’t wait to try like the Squash Puppies and the Garlic Rosemary Pork Tenderloin.
The Wattenbarger clan does a great job of providing a balance between traditional southern dishes and updated, healthier versions that are suitable for everyday meals.
I have to mention the photography in this cookbook, it’s absolutely stunning. The pictures alone are worth the purchase of this cookbook. Seriously.
One of my favorite recipe I’ve tried from this cookbook is the Breaded Pork Chops with Avocado Peach Salsa. It’s a perfect blend of sweet and savory, and the avocado-peach salsa added a fresh and tangy twist to the dish. My family and I devoured it in minutes, it was that good.
I also loved the Honey Grilled Peaches, it was a simple yet delicious recipe that elevated the taste of fresh peaches to another level. Awesome.
Overall, The New Southern Cookbook is a must-have for any southern cuisine lover. The recipes are delicious and easy to follow and there’s a great balance between traditional southern dishes and updated, healthier versions that are suitable for everyday meals. The cookbook is also inclusive as it provides variations for different dietary needs.
