Do you know what I tell people when they ask me what’s the most important part of cooking?
I tell them, it’s taking care of the basics. You’d be amazed at how many kitchens lack the simple tools that let you do a great job rather than an average job.
They’re got fancy knives and beautiful pots and pans but then when you go for a cheese grater or a potato peeler, they’re rusting and broken.
Or you’re doing a roast meal and you get half way through and you go to baste the meat and find yourself confronted with a drawer full of pastry brushes losing hair at a rapid rate. It’s not good enough.

Basting Matters For A Whole Host Of Things
Now, if you’ve never used a basting brush, you don’t know what you’re missing.
Cooking without one means an uneven layer of fat, marinade, etc. on your meat and vegetables and that means they won’t cook consistently.
This nice lady on YouTube explains how you use a basting brush. It’s not rocket science mind you.
You just dip the brush in whatever liquid you are using and paint the outside of what it’s supposed to be used on. It’s really easy.
The Best Brushes Are Long Lasting But Not Eternal
I liked the Zicome Set of 4 Silicone Pastry Basting Grill Barbecue Brushes they are excellent for using at a BBQ where you really want to ensure the marinade on meat is evenly spread before it goes in the flames.
A pack of 4 is ideal here because you’ll have many different meats and marinades and you don’t want to risk contamination.
You can find the Zicome Set of 4 Silicone Pastry Basting Grill Barbecue Brushes on Amazon where they are cheap and cheerful. Which is ideal for brushes that will last you a summer or two before being retired in favor of fresh ones.
