The British Baking Book Is A Savory And Sweet Triumph

The British Baking Book

The British Baking Book: The History of British Baking, Savory and Sweet, written by Regula Ysewijn, is an absolutely delightful and comprehensive cookbook.

Not only does it provide over 100 authentic and delicious recipes, but it also delves into the history and cultural significance of British baking.

As a lover of all things baking, I was immediately drawn to this cookbook and as I explored the pages, I was struck by the amount of care and attention that Ysewijn put into researching the history and evolution of British baking. The author’s passion for her subject is evident in the evocative narrative and beautiful imagery that accompanies each recipe.

One of the things I love most about this cookbook is the wide range of recipes it offers. From sweet to savory, there is truly something for everyone.

Tottenham Cake

I was particularly excited to try my hand at the Pink-Frosted Tottenham Cake, a traditionally British recipe that I had never heard of before.

The recipe was well written and easy to follow, and the end result was a moist and flavorful cake that my whole family enjoyed.

Another recipe that stood out to me was the Whitby Lemon Buns. As someone who loves the combination of sweet and tangy flavors, I knew these would be a hit.

The buns were light and fluffy, with the perfect balance of sweetness and lemon zest. I also appreciated the sense-of-place heritage of this recipe, as it hails from the coastal town of Whitby.

Lastly, I have to give a shoutout to the Scottish Oatcakes recipe. Being of Scottish descent, I have a special affection for this traditional Scottish dish.

The recipe was spot-on, and the oatcakes turned out perfectly crispy and buttery. I loved being able to make a piece of my heritage in my own kitchen.

Overall, The British Baking Book is an excellent cookbook that I would highly recommend to anyone. It not only provides delicious and authentic recipes but also offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and cultural significance of British baking.
